How the skill builds
In Grammar and Writing > Class 1 > Sentences, children practise how words become complete ideas. They learn to spot fragments, arrange jumbled words, identify subject and predicate, and recognise sentence types such as declarative, interrogative, imperative and exclamatory sentences.
The printable activities include word cards, making sentences tasks, changing types practice, descriptive writing prompts, short composition work, and conjunction exercises using because, so, or and but. Each worksheet supports early sentence writing in a clear, child-friendly way.
Class 1 sentence work begins with meaning: a sentence should tell, ask, command or show strong feeling. Children first read simple examples, then decide whether a group of words is a full sentence or only a fragment. From there, they practise sentence types—declarative, interrogative, imperative and exclamatory—using the correct end mark and a capital letter at the beginning.

From word cards to composition
Word cards and jumbled sentence tasks help children hear natural word order: “The bird can fly” makes sense, while “fly bird the can” needs fixing. Making sentences activities then lead into writing their own lines. Descriptive prompts encourage children to add useful details, and short composition tasks help them connect two or three ideas without losing clarity.
Conjunctions and connected ideas
The worksheets introduce conjunctions in simple, meaningful contexts. Children join ideas with and in early writing, then practise because for reasons, so for results, or for choices and but for contrast. Combining conjunctions activities help them see that joining should make the sentence smoother, not longer for no reason.
A simple home routine
Choose one sentence from the worksheet and ask your child: “Who or what is it about?” and “What are they doing?” This builds subject-predicate understanding. Next, ask your child to change the type: turn a telling sentence into a question, a command or an exclamation. End by asking them to add one describing word or join a second idea with because, so, or or but.

Classroom uses for teachers
Teachers can use these printables for grammar practice, writing centers, morning work, small-group support or quick checks after a lesson on types of sentences. Word cards work well for pair activities, while fragments and jumbled tasks are useful for reteaching. Composition pages can be placed after sentence-level practice so children apply the skill in connected writing.

Common errors and why iBloom worksheets help
Watch for missing capitals, full stops used after questions, fragments that name only a person or thing, and conjunctions placed between ideas that do not match. A child-friendly strategy is: Read it aloud, find the who, find the action, then check the ending mark. iBloom worksheets help by moving from recognition to correction to independent writing, so children do not just label sentences—they learn to make them.
