Find the part that is missing
Find the missing part in addition equations and picture stories by thinking about how many more are needed to make a known total.
A missing-addend problem gives a whole and one part, then asks what more is needed. Children can fill empty spaces in a frame, draw the missing objects, or count up from the known part.

Make the blank meaningful
Use a part-part-whole mat with counters. Teachers can cover one part after showing the total; families can place counters in a row and ask how many empty spaces remain.
Guidance for parents and teachers
Show the total and one part with counters, then leave empty spaces for the unknown part. Say 'We have __ and need __ altogether; how many more?' rather than treating the blank as a trick. In class, use part-part-whole mats; at home, use a row of snack pieces or buttons. Simplify with totals to five. Extend by asking children to write the related addition fact. Prompt: 'How many spaces are empty before we reach the total?'
