Sort before graphing
Sort familiar objects by one visible attribute, count each group, and record the results as the first step in collecting useful data.
Data begins when children decide what belongs together. These pages use colours, shapes, and familiar objects to practise one sorting rule at a time, followed by careful counting of each category.

Make categories visible
Set out labelled hoops, trays, or paper mats before recording on a page. Teachers can use a shared class collection; families can sort buttons, socks, or toys by one agreed feature.
Guidance for parents and teachers
State one sorting rule aloud and model placing one object before children begin. Count each completed group with one touch per item, then record the total. In class, invite children to explain why an item belongs in a category. Simplify with two strongly different groups. Extend by changing the rule and comparing the new totals. Prompt: 'What is the one feature we are using to sort today?'
