Compare a set, not just a pair
Use several measurement ideas together to compare and arrange familiar objects from shortest to longest, lightest to heaviest, or least to greatest capacity.
Once children can compare two objects, they can order three or four objects using one attribute at a time. These activities ask them to look carefully, line up items fairly, and use language such as shortest, longest, lightest, and heaviest.

Encourage mathematical talk
Ask a child to explain the first and last position in an ordered set. Teachers can use object cards at a pocket chart; families can line up spoons, socks, or containers before marking the worksheet.
Guidance for parents and teachers
Choose one measurement word for each round and make the ordering rule visible. Align lengths at a baseline, test weights by lifting, and compare capacity with equal scoops. For a quick class routine, give pairs three object cards and ask them to defend their order. Simplify by using three items with obvious differences. Extend by including equal items or asking children to create an ordered set. Prompt: 'Which evidence tells you this belongs here?'
