Read and align the place values

A 6-digit number has hundred-thousands, ten-thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones places. In the Indian system, the same positions are read as lakhs, ten-thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones. The value does not change when comma grouping changes.

Write one digit in each column. Ones must be under ones, tens under tens, and so on. Graph paper or a hand-drawn place-value chart can help children who lose alignment.

Column addition method

Write the numbers one below the other with matching place values aligned.
Begin in the ones column.
Add each column from right to left.
If a column total is 10 or more, write the ones digit and regroup the tens digit into the next column.
After the final column, read the complete sum and estimate whether it is reasonable.

Worked example: add two 6-digit numbers

Add 245,678 + 132,459.

Ones: 8 + 9 = 17. Write 7 and regroup 1 ten.
Tens: 7 + 5 + 1 = 13. Write 3 and regroup 1 hundred.
Hundreds: 6 + 4 + 1 = 11. Write 1 and regroup 1 thousand.
Thousands: 5 + 2 + 1 = 8.
Ten-thousands: 4 + 3 = 7.
Hundred-thousands: 2 + 1 = 3.

The sum is 378,137, written as 3,78,137 with Indian comma grouping.

Understand regrouping instead of memorising carries

Regrouping means exchanging ten units of one place for one unit of the next place. Ten ones become one ten, ten tens become one hundred, and the same pattern continues through thousands and lakhs. Ask the child to say, “17 ones are 1 ten and 7 ones,” before writing the carry digit.

For addition without regrouping, the method is the same; each column total simply stays below 10.

Check a large-number sum

Estimate first

Round 245,678 to about 246,000 and 132,459 to about 132,000. The estimated total is about 378,000, so 378,137 is reasonable.

Use inverse subtraction

Subtract one addend from the total. If 378,137 − 132,459 equals 245,678, the addition is confirmed.

Scan the carry digits

Check that every regrouped digit was added once in the next column and not copied into the answer row.

Use 6-digit addition in word problems
