From sorting to data
These Grade 1 math worksheets help children move from noticing what is the same and different to organizing information in clear, countable ways. Students practise sorting, deciding whether items belong or do not belong, using tally marks, and answering questions from simple graphs.
The printable activities include tally sheets, sort and count pages, pictographs, blank bar charts, bar graphs, and reading bar chart tasks. Each page builds confidence with data words such as more, fewer, most, least, category, total, and compare.
In Math > Grade 1 > Data Graphing, children begin by looking closely at objects and pictures. Same Different and Belong Not Belong tasks ask them to explain a rule: color, shape, animal type, food group, or another visible feature. This prepares them for Sorting and Sort And Count pages, where a set of pictures becomes data that can be counted and compared.

Tally marks and tally sheets
Tally Marks worksheets show children that counting can be recorded in groups. A Tally Sheet may ask students to mark choices, count pictures, or total each category. Watch for reversals such as writing six tally marks without grouping the fifth across the first four. Encourage children to touch and count each mark, then write the total beside it.
Reading bar charts and pictographs
Reading Bar Charts, Bar Charts, Bar Graphs, and Pictographs help first graders connect a picture display to questions. They may identify the category with the most votes, find which has fewer, or count how many in all. Blank Bar Charts add one more step: children transfer counted data into bars, keeping each bar lined up with its label.
A simple parent routine
At home, collect real data in a small way. Ask, Which fruit did our family eat today? or What color socks are in the laundry? Make tally marks together, count each group, and draw quick bars. Then ask three questions: Which has the most? Which has the least? How many altogether? This routine makes graphing feel useful, not abstract.

Classroom uses for teachers
Teachers can use these pages for math centers, small-group reteaching, early finisher work, or quick checks after a class survey. A useful sequence is Collecting Data, Tally Sheets, Sort And Count, Blank Bar Charts, then reading questions from pictographs and bar graphs. Students can also compare answers with a partner and explain the evidence in the graph.

Why iBloom worksheets help
The worksheets keep the data small and visual so Grade 1 learners can focus on reasoning. Clear categories, simple counts, and repeated question types help children see that graphs are not just drawings; they are tools for organizing information and making comparisons.
Helpful answers
Frequently asked questions
What data graphing skills do these Grade 1 worksheets cover?
They cover collecting data, sorting pictures, using tally marks and tally sheets, reading bar charts, completing blank bar charts, and answering simple questions about pictographs and bar graphs.
How can I help my child understand tally marks?
Have your child count real objects and record one tally mark for each item. Emphasize that the fifth mark crosses the first four, then count the group of five before adding any extra marks.
What is the difference between a bar chart and a pictograph for first graders?
A bar chart shows data with bars that grow longer or taller as the count increases. A pictograph uses pictures or symbols to show the count in each category.
Are blank bar charts too difficult for Grade 1 students?
Blank bar charts are appropriate when the data is already counted or shown clearly. Children practise matching each category to a bar and coloring or marking the correct number of spaces.
What common mistakes should I watch for in graphing work?
Look for skipped items while counting, bars drawn under the wrong label, tally marks not grouped correctly, and answers based on guessing instead of reading the graph carefully.
Is this grade 1 data graphing worksheet free?
Yes. You can preview it for free and use the printable worksheet for home or classroom practice.
Can I download this grade 1 data graphing worksheet as a PDF?
Yes. Use the worksheet download option to save a printable PDF, or print the worksheet directly from the page.
Does this grade 1 data graphing worksheet include answers or an answer key?
When the activity has fixed answers, iBloom includes answer support so parents and teachers can check the completed worksheet.
